Original story found on Houston Food Fetish
I love good southern, comfort food, so I was delighted when I had a chance to taste the new menu at Kitchen 713. I heard a few reviews from The Houston Black Restaurant Week crowd, so I was eager to take a look when I was invited to try the new menu.
Kitchen 713 sits at 4601 Washington Avenue, Houston, Texas 77007.
The restaurant is known in the city of Houston for it’s popular Brunch menu. My visit allowed me to sample some of the new menu items.
Let’s start with this Grilled Cheese Oxtail Sandwich. I would of never thought of the combination. The smoked provolone made it creamy, the oxtails were tender, and the pickled collard stems gave it a nice salty flavor. The toasted, buttered brioche made the perfect grilled cheese sandwich.
Okay, so let’s be honest regarding this traditional dish. I’m breed from Louisiana/Texas roots, and I don’t eat grits. I know I know. But, I love shrimp. The shrimp was good. All of the guests at the table loved the grits. They were complimented with poblano cheese.
The Thai Beef Salad came with vegetables and herbs. If you want a dish for the summer that’s not too heavy and has a lot of flavor, this would be my pick.
The Watermelon Tomato Salad is a great starter dish. You can share this before your main meal. It came with Feta, Watermelon, Herloom Tomatoes, Basil and Lemon Vinaigrette.
The next dish I tried was called Jalapeno Honey Butter Hoecakes. This dish had fried oysters, preserved lemon, and salmon roe. Salmon roe, if you have never heard of it before, is the egg of salmon fish. The hoecake was more like a traditional corn cake versus a pancake.
The Hot Browns were the most interesting item on the menu. I’m not a fan of bechamel sauce, so I wasn’t originally excited about trying it. But, boy was I surprised. The chef took sourdough bread, smoked turkey breast, bechamel sauce, roasted roma tomatoes, and bacon. You can never go wrong with bacon!
Overall, I thought all the dishes were good. I left feeling like I needed to go back soon for more dishes. Now, you know I love a good cocktail. Lately, I’ve been exploring new cocktails that don’t have vodka.
The bartenders spent the evening mixing up drinks for guests. This gin inspired drink is named The Last Call. You can find it on the cocktail menu.
I’ll be back definitely. I think I’ll try brunch first the next visit. Until next time, love, peace and food.
